Mushers from all over Australia are set to converge on Falls Creek to compete at the 7th Annual Falls Creek Sled Dog Classic.  On Friday 4th and Saturday 5th of August, Falls Creek will host the premier alpine sled dog race in Australia – the only sled dog race through an Alpine Village.  After an exhibition event in 2010, the race is now in its 6th year and is a must see Falls Creek Resort experience.  Many spectators now come to Falls Creek specifically on the first Saturday in August to have the opportunity to get up close and meet the dogs and mushers.  The adrenaline and anxiety is real as spectators can get within metres of the teams about to race.  The dogs are screaming with excitement, they just want to run and win.

The Falls Creek Village streets will come alive on Saturday night at 6.00pm as up to 40 sled dog teams start the race from the Slalom Plaza and run a 5km course, climbing their way up to and along the aqueduct trail and then fly past the Village Bowl and wind their way back to Slalom Plaza through the village streets.  We have thousands of spectators lining the streets in a party atmosphere cheering these amazing dogs and their mushers home.

The event is an accredited Australian Sled Dog Sports Association race and in 2017 will see elite teams of Alaskan Huskies, Siberian Huskies, Eurohounds and Alaskan Malamutes compete for prizemoney and the coveted first place titles in 6 dog, 4 dog, 3 dog and 2 dog classes.

We have teams travelling from Western Australia, Queensland, South Australia, New South Wales, Victoria and international entries from New Zealand.

A very special innovation for 2017 is the inclusion of our Junior Challenge events, to promote the sustainability of sled dog sports in Australia.  In 2017 we will have young elite mushers aged 13 to 18 from around Australia competing as part of the open 2 dog, 3 dog and 4 dog classes.  These junior’s show an amazing attitude beyond their years and are committed to their dogs and the sport.

We welcome the local Falls Creek community to come along and experience an amazing and unique event.  Feel free to meet these remarkable dogs and their mushers as they prepare, prior to the races during the day on Friday and Saturday near the Slalom Street Car Park.  Remember to please ask the owners prior to approaching dogs and please do not bring your own dog for greetings.

Racing starts on Friday 4th August at 6pm from Windy Corner Car Park and on Saturday 5th August at 6pm from Slalom Plaza.
